Tune Up Process at The Bicycle Shop

Tune Ups at The Bicycle Shop1. Inspection of bicycle: Bicycle is checked for broken, worn or corroded parts that could inhibit proper function and safety. Bicycle is checked for bearing play in wheels, bottom bracket, and headset. Wheels are then checked for true and spoke tension. Brakes are checked for proper alignment to rim or disc as well as wear. Gears are checked for proper function. Defects are noted and corrected as follows by our skilled mechanics.

2. Rear wheel adjustments: Rear wheel is removed from bicycle; bearings are adjusted and locked down; wheel is then 'trued', or straightened and aligned, and spoke tension is correctly adjusted throughout wheel. This process includes correcting wheel 'runout', the up and down motion of the rim when spun. Wheel is replaced into bicycle frame dropouts and locked down to correct tightness.

3. Rear brake adjustments: Rear brake pads are adjusted to correctly contact rim without risk of slipping off rim or contacting tire. Proper attention is paid to correct toe-in adjustments for maximum braking performance. For disc brakes, removal of disc pads are done when wheel is out of frame if necessary. Adjustment of disc brakes will require correct alignment of brake caliper so that both pads release from disc to their maximum ability to prevent excess rubbing of disc during riding. Pad adjustments are made per disc caliper specifications. Barrel adjusters are reset.

Rear Derailleur adjustments: The rear derailleur adjustments are made through proper setting of adjustment screws; proper setting of B-tension screw and setting correct cable tension. Hanger alignment is checked at this time (adjustment of derailleur hanger is an extra charge). Barrel adjusters are reset.

5. Bottom Bracket / Crankset adjustments: Where applicable, the bottom bracket bearings are adjusted to proper tension to allow maximum performance and minimum wear of the bearings with out play. Bottom bracket cups are checked for proper tightening to correct torque setting. Crankarms are checked for proper torque. Pedals are checked and correctly tightened.

6. Front Derailleur adjustments: Front derailleur adjustments require the proper height and angle to be set for clearance of the chainrings. Set screws are adjusted to prevent the derailling of the chain off the inner or outer chainrings as well as correcting any cable tension issues. Barrel adjusters are reset.

7. Headset adjustments: Any excess play or tightness in headset is corrected at this point. Stem is checked for proper torque setting to prevent loosening of stem or handlebars.

8. Front wheel adjustments: Front wheel is removed from fork and bearings are checked and adjusted. Adjustments are locked down with cones and lock nuts tightened against each other. Wheel is then 'trued' and proper spoke tension is corrected. Wheel 'runout' is corrected. Wheel is replaced into bicycle frame dropouts and locked down to correct tightness.
